With so little opportunity for collaboration, instrumentalists have gone down the solo route, One such musician-composer is London-based experimental saxophonist Rachel Musson, Of course, solo saxophone goes with the territory of the avant garde and such giants as Parker, Braxton and Zorn are part of a long tradition that Musson has clearly drawn from, On Dreamsing however she forges her own path that's more concisely crafted and orderly than you might normally associate with an avant-improv player; circular breathing marathons are definitely out for one, You get the feeling no note is wasted even when she's at her most unrestrained and fiery.
Musson draws from a broad-based language that includes tonal jazz traditions as well as avant garde technique, She tells stories with a cohesive precision while shifting back and forth between folk-melody, contemplative sax and raw, overblown sonic textures using a varied range of extended technique: Brotzmann-esque multiphonics, onomatopoeic vocal gestures and slap tonguing included, Her playing is neatly interspersed with spoken word poetry that enhances the music and engages the listener who otherwise might find all-out solo sax improv a bit heavy going, She's previously worked in free improv settings but those who have heard her compositions/arrangements in larger ensembles will not be surprised at her imaginative and successful integration of both those disciplines here.
