The second biggest challenge for anyone taking on the Zawinul/Weather Report canon is what to choose from it. Here, the r.s.q.v. diplomatically keep one eye on a general audience and the other on aficionados, mixing hits (eg ‘In A Silent Way’) with less well-known fare (eg ‘Dream Clock’). However – for readers of this magazine, at least – the first biggest challenge is to do something with the music that doesn't quickly drive one back to the originals, muttering darkly about ‘a pointless exercise’. This is precisely the quartet's schtick, though – they've tackled some Zawinul before, as well as a whole album of Mahavishnu. The rearrangement of components is especially clever on ‘Black Market’ as they strum, pluck and bow, transforming and preserving in happy proportion. But ‘Peace’ (from Zawinul's 1986 solo album Dialects) is perhaps the emotional highpoint, the intrinsic, harmony-revealing nature of a string quartet pointing up the piece's delicate beauty.
