Rajeev Taranath is a senior disciple of the school or style of playing to which the sarodist Ali Akbar Khan and sitarist Nikhil Banerjee belonged, and sitarist and surbahar player Annapurna Devi, her ex-husband Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan's son Aashish Khan belong. He studied with all of them. His instrument is the sarod, a short-necked lute with a sonorously ringing string sound. This particular release derives from two concerts. The combination of repertoire items works well, going from the heavy-duty, opening ‘Yaman Kalyan’ from Paris' Théâtre de la Ville in 2008 to the lighter fare represented by ragas ‘Mishra Kirwani’ and ‘Sindhu Bhairavi’ from Beall Concert Hall, University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon from five years earlier (possibly from the same recital as Manan – Meditation (Navras, 2007). Rajeev Taranath handles the textures and the story-lines superlatively while Abhiman Kausal's tabla playing is excellent. But Kausal's flicks and chimes towards the end of the final fast composition in ‘Sindhu Bhairavi’ are coiled wit.
