This is the fourth album for Posi-Tone by one of the most technically gifted but strangely under-acclaimed saxophonists in jazz today. On a par perhaps with say, Jerry Bergonzi, though each has his own sound and style. Bowen always sets himself the highest possible standards and approaches every record with a seemingly endless batch of new compositions, all of interest melodically, harmonically and rhythmically. This is one of his most enjoyable with excellent contrasting tunes, which bring out the best from his top-notch sidemen. Moreno, one of the more adventurous, generally sensitive new guitarists, has seldom played with such inspired spirit as here, and Jared Gold reaches new heights with ballsy Larry Young-inspired solos. Rudy Royston continues to grow as a hard-hitting, listening drummer and is fast becoming a first-call for all sorts of dates. But the star – and the inspiration – is the superb Bowen, a very humble human being apparently, who consistently plays with fire and unashamed emotion and whose originals challenge everyone. And they all come through with flying colours. Producer Mark Free should be extra proud of this one.
