Peterson, a drummer to be mentioned in the same breath as the Tains of this world, has been an impressively consistent recording artist, making a string of very accomplished albums for both Blue Note and Criss Cross over almost three decades, so it is no surprise that this concert performance is of a high standard. The quartet Fo’ (drums, bass, vibes, clarinet), is a sharp, cohesive unit and the addition of the Mo’ (soprano sax, percussion), enhances rather than compromises the chemistry, as bubbling Afro-Cuban beats are brought into the mostly post-bop mix to good effect. The polyrhythmic relationship between the leader and Eguie Castrillo is particularly successful on original compositions such as ‘The Tears I Cannot Hide’, though the reading of Strayhorn's timeless ‘Chelsea Bridge’ proves that Peterson can do sensitive as well as strident. Well engineered and mixed, this is a live recording in which everybody can be clearly heard, which is not always the case, and the way the band has paced the set, shuttling nicely between different levels of intensity, attack and tempo, is also good. Fans of Dave Holland's 1990s small group offerings will enjoy this, though on the subject of bassists, the one misstep of the album's credits is the omission of the Fo's strings player! Which is quite criminal given the commendable licks of Alexander L.J Toth.
