Gary Burton's duets with Chick Corea that garnered four Grammy awards over the years tend to blot out the light from his duo work with other musicians, but one of the vibist's favourite collaborations on record was with guitarist Ralph Towner in 1975. He chose their version of ‘Goodbye Pork Pie Hat’ on his recent anthology Take Another Look (Mack Avenue) which stands as an album highlight here, along with ‘Icarus’ and the ballad ‘Some Other Time’. Though Burton's virtuosity was a thing of wonder, he never let it overwhelm the storytelling privilege of the improviser, something he learned from his time with Stan Getz. Also, he was very conscious of his playing suiting the needs of the song and the musical context in which he found himself, even if it meant limiting his style to suit the needs at hand. This ability would be refined during his bi-annual duo tours with Corea, but here it already seems in almost perfect balance as acoustic guitar and vibes create graceful arabesques around the thematic material at hand.
