Some might be tempted to quibble that the disc's title is a bit of a misnomer: after all, the recording was made seven years ago – not quite new, then. And the opening cut, ‘Bye Bye Blackbird’, was first recorded in 1926 (Miles Davis's definitive version dates from 1956) – so that's not quite new either. Still, there's no question that about the ‘trio’ part of the title: led by Italian pianist Roberto Ciammarughi, all three members make their presence felt. ‘Anabasys’ gets off to a plangent, clattering start thanks to drummer Gerald Cleaver and bassist Miroslav Vitous’ forthright contributions before Ciammarughi begins to wind the tune up what feels like a very tight staircase. The result is a splendidly thrumming six minutes or so of mounting irresolution, which then gives way to the luminous, impressionistic ‘Johannes’. The recording was made live in the Teatro dei Riuniti in Umbertide – not that you'd know there was an audience present given the silence between tracks. That doesn't reflect any lack of enthusiasm on the part of spectators: apparently Ciammarughi asks people not to applaud between numbers during gigs so as not to diffuse the emotion created by the performance. And there's no doubting the intensity or passion here. An artist worth investigating.
