OK, so this debut by Danish prog-fusion monsters appeared briefly on CD in the States a decade ago but with used copies selling for upwards of $300 on Amazon, we can agree that it's a rarity, right? Why Secret Oyster remain so little known is a mystery – other than the fact that Scandinavian underground bands made little impact on British and American audiences back in the day. Formed by saxophonist Karsten Vogel as a jazzier project arising out of the ashes of defunct early Scando jazz-psych pioneers Burnin Red Ivanhoe, Secret Oyster also featured pianist Kenneth Knudsen who previously worked in an avant-garde jazz trio and had never played electric keys before being drafted in to the Oyster. But it all gels surprisingly well. Their sound is high-energy instrumental jamming with a psychedelic twist, operating in a post-Soft Machine milieu – an approach they pursued through four albums before disbanding in 1977.
