Danish pianist and composer Rasmus Sørensen moved to New York to study at the Manhattan School of Music, join the jazz scene and play at some of the city’s most prestigious jazz venues. Now he’s returned to Denmark to record his third release, accompanied by the same team that accompanied him on his 2022 trio debut, Traits, bassist Jon Henriksson and drummer Francesco Ciniglio. (In between he recorded Balancing Act, a collection of originals and Great American Songbook numbers, not to mention John Coltrane’s ‘Mr Day’, with Alexander Claffy and Kendrick Scott.) Henriksson and Ciniglio give the material an almost weightless feel – opener ‘The Sun’ seems to float into and out of the listener’s consciousness – while Sørensen provides some memorable compositions. The shifts in rhythm and mood in ‘Perennial Youth’ are not wasted; likewise the title track, which works up a nice head of steam after a gentle start. Full of promise.
