The American vocalist-guitarist's singing and playing are as consistent as ever, but he is let down by his material on what is arguably his weakest album to date. The immense soulfulness of Midon's delivery and the razor sharp dexterity of his rhythm playing are all too frequently compromised by bland, MOR-ish melodies and lyrics here. Which inevitably gives the impression that the quality control button was not turned on, unlike on previous releases such as 2005's quite inspired State Of Mind, where the blend of soul, jazz, pop and latin was so winningly fresh. Having said that, any set featuring guests such as Lizz Wright, Dianne Reeves, Richard Bona and Marcus Miller is bound to have its redeeming features and Midon does click into his best songsmith groove on the James Taylor-ish ‘I Can't Love You’ while the Wright duet ‘Keep Holding On’ is a pretty song that is well executed. Sadly, these highlights are spread far too thinly over a 14-song set, which would have benefited from some astute editing and sequencing.
