A clutch of 45s had forewarned the public that Ray Charles was about to become a genuine force to be reckoned with, but it was a session recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival in July 1958 that revealed the full impact of Ray and his eight-piece band by kicking off with a deeply passionate ‘The Right Time’. Two years later, he returned to Newport to give yet another show-stopping performance which was faithfully captured on tape by Voice Of America to further establish the band's jazz chops by way of James Moody's ‘The Story’, Neal Hefti's ‘Lil’ Darlin'’ and Max Roach's ‘Jazz Waltz’. The remainder of this 2CD scoops up mainly live European performances and presents us with ‘Moanin’’ (Bobby Timmons), ‘Popo’ (Shorty Rogers) and ‘Doodlin’’ (Horace Silver), shoulder-to-shoulder with some familiar vocal hits.
