Funky good time music New Orleans-style is now synonymous with the Rebirth Brass Band. This CD is a sizeable dollop of just that. At the start of its 30-year life it was close to the old brass band tradition of the Olympia, Eureka and Onward, while adding some of the innovations of the Dirty Dozen, but retaining the essential street character of the music. A couple of tracks here reflect that: a rather lame ‘Lord Lord Lord’ and a section of ‘Your Mama Don't Dance’ that's actually the old standard ‘Joe Avery's Piece’. At its best, the Rebirth still has the big brassy outdoor sound of a vintage New Orleans brass band, but on the rest of the record it is firmly in the self-referential repetitive riff territory of the more recent tradition. This means that whilst the old Atlantic or Folkways records of the early bands were worth listening to in their own right, this is essentially extrovert (and often extremely messy) party music, with some good moments, but none of the texture, subtlety and depth of the earlier style. Almost five minutes of the repetitive ‘Move Your Body’ riff is more than enough for anyone, and that's the welcome tip of what is for the most part a rather ghastly iceberg.
