Janette Mason is the MD at London's Hideaway jazz club and worked for a while as a session musician, touring with Oasis and Seal and writing for TV shows, including Sex and the City and Come Dine With Me. Her latest compositions are smooth and funky, a little generic perhaps, a little hotel lobby, but competent and well played. ‘Pent Up’ begins with bouncy, bluesy piano, working in syncopated stabs and bursts of bubblegum synth. ‘Bridge 2 – London’ and ‘Bridge 1 – Westminster’ are poignant piano sketches, while ‘Skating On Thin Ice’ and ‘Altered Reality’ are organ-led jams. Tom Mason mostly plays electric bass, but adds yearning bow scrapes to ‘SiSi’, while Jack Pollitt keeps things tight on kit, switching to pulsing udu (a Nigerian tonal drum) for the murky ‘Evil Of All Roots’ and groovy triangle for the title-track.
