The intersecting paths in this intriguing release from Renee Rosnes are Latin music and jazz, for which she has formed an ideal rhythm section — her own piano and electric piano interacting principally with the guitar of Pinhero, ably supported by Patitucci’s mobile bass lines and the drums and percussion of Cruz and Boccato.

Soloists are generally given individual features, so Steve Davis, for example, shines on Caetano Veloso’s ‘Trilhos Urbanos’, setting up a forceful piano outing for Rosnes, while the opening ‘Frevo’ (by Egberto Gismonti) showcases Candian flautist Shelley Brown. Edu Lobo is featured on his own lovely ballad ‘Pra Dizer Adeus’, with the most delicate accompaniment from Rosnes’ piano. She also sets up a descending motif that runs through much of the accompaniment to Maucha Adnet’s ‘Canta Canta Mais’.

The central tracks on the album are all relatively gentle and relaxed, and while beautifully played, a little more variety of tempi would be welcome. This finally arrives in the form of Elis Regina’s briskly played composition ‘Amor Até o Fim’, which features the rhythm quintet with both Potter and Davis, including a particularly strong, forceful solo from Chris. By the time we get to Maucha Adnet’s final vocal on ‘Caminhos Cruzados’ we’ve been on a charming, slightly wistful journey between genres, that is never less than involving, but sometimes a bit short of the passion and power that Rosnes injects into her live performances.
