It’s 30 years already since Canadian-born Rosnes descended on the New York scene, making an immediate impact with, among others, Joe Henderson’s all-female rhythm-section. She’s been prolific with work under her own name, and her compositions are usually more than perfunctory excuses for improvisation. That’s certainly the case with her seven-part ‘Galapagos Suite’, inspired by thoughts of human and animal evolution and the archaeological record thereof (hence the album title). There’s some excellent playing here from Rosnes and her front-line and, especially obvious on two movements that dispense with Wilson, there’s stimulating and sensitive interplay between the vibes and piano. The two remaining, non-suite tracks are based on contrafact themes, the first identified as derived from ‘How Deep Is The Ocean?’ while ‘Goodbye Mumbai’ takes its sequence (presumably deliberately) from Monk’s tune ‘Thelonious’. Unlike some Smoke Sessions items, it’s not recorded live at the club in question, but the studio seems an appropriate setting for this carefully organised and well realised music.
