Abbasi's recordings grow yet richer, and with Suno Suno (Urdu for “listen, listen”), his second release with his Invocation band, he's taken a quantum leap forward. Of course it helps to have the likes of Iyer on board. From the off – an angular but simply framed ‘Thanks For Giving’ – the piano man is given acres to stretch out with his lean, tough textured stylings. The album's worth it for Iyer alone, and his rigorous attack ably counterpoints Abbasi's long, intense lines. This music is more emotionally open than Abbasi's earlier recordings, relying heavily on big grooves, double upped themes and some rock ’n’ rolling drums. Abbasi claims much of the music grew from the devotional joys of Quawwali, but it sings and celebrates in any musical language you wish. The trio of soloists go for it with a venom, to the point you wish there were more moments of space as on Iyer's intro to ‘Monument’. The knotty themes and extended soloing don't always make for easy listening but, hell's teeth, we live in serious times and a band that refl ects such days deserves nothing but praise.
