The raindrops on the front cover of Intuition reflect meteorological conditions in Denmark during 2011. These four musicians led by the Danish bassist Andersson and featuring his compatriot Jacob Anderskov, of Anderskov Accident, got together during the wettest summer in the country since 1879. Rather than causing depression, however, the relentless rain inspired their improvisations – or, as the album credits have it – ‘spontaneous compositions’. The term is fully justified. Sensitive, thoughtful, restrained, the tracks show a clear sense of structure and an intuitive understanding of group dynamics. And intuition, as the album title suggests, is the key: they even include an Ingrid Bergman quote celebrating “the small voice inside you, which tells you exactly what to say.” Yet when the musicians drop out, leaving only the sound of rain at the end of the final track, we're left wishing for a little more dynamic range: the odd thunderstorm to join the gentle pitter patter.
