This is a fantastic record. Recorded at a single session in Woodstock, in the state of New York, In Motion is, appropriately, full of movement – but it’s subtle and nuanced as well as kinetic. The musicianship is consummate, often meaning playing less rather than more, but there is nothing insipid about these 10 tracks: ‘Dichotomy’, for instance, has jolts and rude awakenings in store for any listener lulled by the ruminative bass solo. Peacock, who has worked with some of the finest piano trios in history, is on fine form here, particularly given that this was recorded just shy of his 80th birthday. That it’s very much a trio record is testament, of course, to Crispell, who has put out several brilliant records on Intakt as well as working with Anthony Braxton and Reggie Workman, and to Poole, who – like Peacock – has played with Paul Bley, as well as the likes of Ira Sullivan and Jaco Pastorious.
