Check out Richard X Bennett's website and his eclectic dress sense: it immediately tells you this is an exuberant personality. Listen to this album and you will hear that judgement confirmed – exuberance (and eclecticism) are its defining qualities. With all but one track written by Bennett it is hardly surprising that his piano is the dominant musical force, notably an assertive left hand that drives most of the pieces.
It's a challenge for bassist Adam Armstrong, but their long-term partnership has clearly given him skills at working around that. In the Scandi-flavoured ‘It's Only July’, one of the more restrained moments among the album's 11 tracks, a pulsing piano chord and tightly buttoned drumming free up a plaintive melodic line with eloquent filigree touches on bass. Bennett's career has been shared between the US and India, with much of his earlier work exploring raga. While there's no Indojazz as such on the album you can still hear the raga approach in some of his melodic deconstructions and the lilting Bollywood tune ‘Tum Hi Ho’ that closes the set and is, in some ways, its most collective trio piece. There's also a clear nod to the pianist's earliest influence in the Abdullah Ibrahim-recalling ‘One Voice’, a power ballad with Mike Post overtones given emotional depth. Like ‘Tum Hi Ho’ the track provides a moment's breathing space in an otherwise high energy sequence of upbeat and characterful workouts strong on groove and style.
