Fans of Swedish vocalist Rigmor Gustafsson will know that she seeks out unique musical situations for her recordings: think of her 2010 release Calling You with the radio.string.quartet.vienna or her 2004 album Close To You featuring the Jacky Terrasson Trio. For her sixth album, When You Make Me Smile, in addition to her working band, Gustafsson is joined by the fantastic Swedish chamber orchestra, Dalasinfoniettan. With music composed by Gustafsson and lyrics by Tomas Bäcklund and Ollie Olson, plus swooning, romantic orchestral charts penned by Magnus Lindgren (who also contributes tenor sax, clarinet and flute), Erik Arvinder and percussionist Calle Rasmusson, the singer produces some of her very finest work. Featuring a chiming, two-note figure in piano, harp and xylophone, album opener ‘Call Me Lonely’ features one of the most breath taking key changes in the bridge. In addition to the ridiculously sultry title track, plus gorgeous soloing from pianist Jonas Östholm on the Burt Bacharachesque ‘If Dreams Are Made Of Sand’, Gustafsson's singing on ‘Forget About The Moonlight’ and ‘Let It Go’ (a duet with Eagle-Eye Cherry) melts the heart. Recorded at Stockholm's X-Level Studios, the album sounds absolutely terrific too.
