Released to complement Marcus O'Dair's biography, this is a brave stab at capturing the spirit of Wyatt, if not a reflection of his many projects. There are inevitably omissions; there's only one Soft Machine cut, two from Matching Mole. No ‘I'm A Believer’. The second CD feels even thinner, reflecting Wyatt the serial collaborator rather than focusing on his work as ‘leader’ (whatever that means). And even within this loose concept, there's nothing from his sublime work with Ros Stephen and Gilad Atzmon. And voices that so complement Wyatt, like Annie Whitehead, are absent. Yet curiously O'Dair finds room for one of his own recordings. But given all this, the humanity, the humour, the anger, the generosity and, oh, that sublime voice, can't help but burn through. A curate's egg of a compilation, but any party for Wyatt is worth turning up to.
