Beaujolais has a sweet touch on the vibes. He also has a flair for writing memorable tunes – six out of nine here – and knows how to pick the right companions. It's his limpid, bell-like sound that illuminates his perky opener ‘Unlucky For Some’, as he soars over the relaxed beat laid down by the excellent team of Thorpe and Clifford before Aspland offers an unhurried look at the theme and Beaujolais returns. Nothing over-heated here, a series of adroit, thoughtful appraisals rather than rushed examinations, ballads contrasted with upbeat pieces, with the vibist deploying his post-Jackson approach in pursuit of elegant, yet highly musical, outcomes. Aspland, too, impresses as he always does, as on the lively ‘Benign Tonight’ or toying with the harmonies on ‘And When You Smile’. There's a sense here that this is a genuine ensemble enterprise: four men thinking as one. Theirs is lovely music – quite deep at times, often ruminative, but ultimately uplifting. A delight.
