The latest in the series of Kellaway and Daniels duo albums stems from a benefit concert set up to feature the clarinettist, who chose an all-Ellington repertoire apart from two simple originals, one by each principal. Doubtless it helped a non-aficionado audience that the basic material is familiar, and the treatments not unnecessarily ‘inventive’. The soloing, on the other hand, is gloriously creative and often technically brilliant but, thanks to the performers’ wit and relaxed sense of time, it clearly doesn’t go over the heads of the audience. Unusually, New Mexico-based classical cellist James Holland is added on some of the heads, and even on a couple of solos which, even before seeing the notes, I had decided were written out – but played with conviction and idiomatic timing, even if they’re not exactly in the Daniels-Kellaway class. Who gets top billing, incidentally, varies according to whether you read the label or the packaging but, either way, this is another impressive album.
