It comes as no surprise to learn that this trio of young twentysomethings met while studying at Leeds College of Music; the same institution that helped spawn such iconoclastic UK post-jazz bands as trioVD, Minghe Morte, Collider and Bilbao Syndrome. In many ways, their mix of improvisation, rock muscle, deep grooves and flash-fried electronics, while certainly fresh and exciting five or six years ago in that first post-Polar Bear flush of reinvigorated Brit-jazz, is beginning to sound as recognisably idiomatic as any 4/4 blues swing. That said, Roller Trio have pretty much nailed that particular approach. Several of the tunes here muster a spiky prog/Canterbury riffage similar to Troyka's. Luke Reddin-Williams' drums are clipped and funky with a satisfying bite; Luke Wynter's guitar darts from a fruity twang to Mahavishnu-ish rippling arpeggios; and, while James Mainwaring's alto occasionally feels a little too thinly mid-range, his use of extended trills and honks plus squally effects adds some serious meat.
