Recorded in 1982 and originally released in October 1984, this reissue of Roseanna Vitro's fine debut album finds a singer brimming with confidence, seemingly at ease in any tempo (her balladeering on Dave Frishberg's alluring title track is a standout), with a pure, bell-like vocal timbre and chops to spare. Vitro is also accompanied by one of the finest trios you could wish for in the shape of pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Buster Williams and drummer Ben Riley.
Graced by great arrangements courtesy of Fred Hersch, highlights include Vitro's crystal clear diction and rhythmic flexibility in opener ‘No More Blues', tenor saxist Arnett Cobb's deft shadowing of the vocal line in ‘Centerpiece' (Cobb was a mentor to Vitro when she began singing professionally in Houston), the fearless phrasing of ‘Love You Madly', plus the impeccable dynamic control and ability to sing right through the melodic line in ‘A Time For Love'. Barron's beautifully considered contributions provide the proverbial icing on the cake.
Vitro's impressive oeuvre is well worth investigating – released on Motéma in 2011, her twelfth album The Music of Randy Newman received a 2012 Grammy nomination for Best Vocal Jazz Album. Listen Here is where it all began, and is a hugely rewarding opening salvo in its own right.
