Clooney was a purveyor of decidedly uneven pop hits in the 1950s, thanks to the machinations of mentor-producer Mitch Miller. Two of her best, ‘Hey There’ and ‘Mangoes’, were covered respectively by Wardell Gray and Sonny Rollins, and versions of both are included in this 104-tune compilation of standards for inclusion on radio shows. As fans noticed two decades later, when she began recording versions of the Great American Songbook for the Concord label, she had a sure-footed, straight-ahead rhythmic style that blended well with jazz mainstreamers. Her background, after all, was in the period when popular singing was heavily influenced by Armstrong and Bing Crosby, who became her second mentor and financed her radio series and subsequent tours. The format for which the present tracks were created requires short, no-nonsense arrangements with almost no instrumental interludes (Cole flexes his chops briefly a couple of times), so listening continuously can be wearing. But Clooney's commitment and charisma are impressive.
