Slippery little fish this one. Something between a stinky sprat and a red herring, if you must know. How often do you get to hear an avant-garde guitar hero make like Megadeth’s Dave Mustaine tapping out over a white man’s ersatz barroom blues, or have the opportunity to cup a lug to a cod-cabaret Sonic Youth medley, the lyrics to that band’s ‘Little Trouble Girl’ drowsily, needlessly reconvened to crown an atomised rendering of Ranaldo and company’s ‘Karen Revisited’? Moore’s (sic) to the point, would you ever want to hear it again? Shame, because it all began pretty encouragingly, with both ‘Kaonashi’ and the decidedly chirpy ‘Tempelhof’ giving glimpses of a type of progressive post-jazz dynamism that bands like Cheer-Accident and Thinking Plague have honed to a tasty art. As for much of the rest… well, don’t say I didn’t warn you. Steer yourself instead towards a copy of Levitation, bandleader Stefan Rusconi’s set of duets with violinist Tobias Preisig, also issued on Qilin. It’s a doozy.
