Here's a treat for blues ‘n’ movie freaks, and jazzers who want to know better. No less than seven Cooder soundtracks, with the exceptional Paris, Texas leading the pack. It's kinda pointless raging that Cooder's evocative bottleneck rips off Blind Willy Johnson's ‘Dark Was The Night’: if you want a source, go to the best, and Cooder's always acknowledged the masters. Quite how three elided notes summon such mystery and melancholia, well, let's leave the magic to weave its spell. Enough to say Paris, Texas’ dark shards, like ‘No Safety Zone’, or the simple yet effective ‘She's Leaving The Bank’ remain timeless. Cooder's collaboration with Wenders was a one off but his work with Walter Hill is reflected here with soundtracks to Crossroads, Johnny Handsome, Trespass and best of all The Long Riders, rich with a raw, fiddle-driven vibe. The missing link remains the slide-drenched Southern Comfort that has still to find its way to CD, although its theme crops up on anthologies. But this magnificent seven will suffice for now.
