A fascinating project that exhumes previously unrecorded scores by Evans, for a top-ranking New York personnel. Five of them were written for the late 1940s Claude Thornhill band, including a Latin version of ‘Maids Of Cadiz’ half as long again as the Miles Ahead score and, in passing, Kimbrough conjures up the unique subtlety of Thornhill's piano style. The remainder are from later, including the ‘missing’ ‘Punjab’ conceived for but never completed on Gil's Individualism album. Along the way, there are convincing solos by such as Gisbert and saxists Wilson, McCaslin and (a fresh name to me) Pietro, while even the vocalists do their bit brilliantly. Not everything is entirely new – the longest track is a 19-minute rewrite of three pieces from the Ampex/Enja Blues In Orbit album, and this ‘Maids Of Cadiz’ has apparently been rediscovered at least once before, by arranger Don Sickler at the Kool Jazz Festival back in 1983. Throughout, there are echoes of known Evans recordings in unexpected places and, if the recording is a bit dry, it helps all the more to appreciate the delights of Evans’ writing.
