Rymden, announces the trio’s website, represents ‘Music Made in Scandinavia’, and its creators are among the best-known Scandi jazzers of recent decades: the Swedes Dan Berglund and Magnus Öström, bassist and drummer from the much-lamented trio e.s.t., and celebrated Norwegian keyboardist Bugge Wesseltoft. The name they have given their joint venture – an aptronym, explains the same website – means ‘space’ in Swedish.
Their previous studio release was appropriately entitled Space Sailors, while this new outing finds them more earthbound, giving sonic expression to the natural world. All three musicians contribute compositions: the opener, Wesseltoft’s ‘The Hike’, offers a serene tour of a rolling aural landscape as the core trio are joined on guitar by John Scofield. Öström’s ‘The Mountain’ has a palpitating bass and drum opening before Wesseltoft’s piano and keyboard work brings a mixture of calm exploration and wilder elaboration.
The final track, ‘Himmel’, introduces a mood of meditative melancholy courtesy of its composer Berglund’s bowed bass which then swells handsomely before folding itself away into silence. Fun and adventurous.
