Interesting document of the emergence of new talent amid wise old heads. Put simply, the story here is the fine performance of a young tenor saxophonist Bob Berg, who at 26, did not sound at all cowed by the illustrious company around him, which, lest we forget, had half of Cannonball Adderley's rhythm section on fine form. Bassist-leader Jones and drummer Hayes do indeed drive the session as if to the bebop manner born while the three-piece horn section rings maximum energy from the changes. The opener, a spirited reprise of Benny Golson's ‘Stablemates’ sets the tone nicely and thereafter it's a good blend of originals and covers, the best of which is Oscar Pettiford's ‘Laverne Walk’. The poignant footnote to this release is that Berg, a Silver, Walton and Miles alumnus, tragically lost his life in a car crash 14 years ago.
