Ooh, if you hear a sweeter earworm than the theme to ‘Barba Tenus Sapientes’ slip it my way. For those who know their Latin, Newbould is rather more talented than simply his beard (though it is a mighty luxuriant one): he has a talent for writing what may appear insouciant songs, but there’s a spacious confidence in the arrangements, a trust in the magic touch of his band, notably Torres’ understated piano, that turns them into gentle giants of melody and rich harmony.
So ‘Barba…’ grows upon you like a many layered Zawinul/Shorter song. By contrast, ‘Little Boy Ghost’ is so intimate (with a gorgeous Torres intro) we feel we are eavesdropping upon something deeper than tears. But then he’ll charm you with ‘Odd Jobs’ or veer left into the urgent vistas of ‘Believe You Me.’
There’s a sense of consideration in Newbould’s music, a due value placed on each note and phrase that invites us to pay due diligence to his wryly subversive material. Newbould the composer is homing in on something special. Listen up.
