Out Here, the recent Mary LaRose tribute to Eric Dolphy made the point that the legendary multi-reed player is not just held in high esteem by whoever aspires to match his prowess on alto saxophone, flute and bass clarinet. The whole sound world he created remains compelling, as does his idiosyncratic way with a theme.
Slovenian guitarist Samo Salamon, who has impressed in a variety of contexts in the past decade, bravely enters the Dolphyverse without the safety net of a band, and this solo performance would have probably met with approval from the master himself because of the considerable audacity of it. Rather than focus exclusively on Dolphy’s peerless ingenuity as both an improviser and soundscaper Salomon has underlined the melodic richness of his catalogue, and the undercurrent of melancholy and lament that runs through much of the material, which can be deeply, Monkishly blues-inflected or lean to Spanish folk music. This is the case on ‘Springtime’, one of the highlights of the 2-CD set, which has a yearning flamenco character but is much more tender than the original. Salamon’s touch moves seamlessly from feather-like sensitivity to spiky belligerence, and the balance he strikes between light and dense voicings, short, pithy phrases and lengthy ascending riffs that swirl around like ribbons in the air is impressive. Dolphy devotees will be intrigued by the re-imaginings of ‘Serene’, ‘Miss Ann’ and ‘The Prophet’, but those who are not familiar with these anthems can enjoy them for what they are - fine pieces of music given a new lease of life by six and 12-string orchestrations that sometimes have just a few notes and sometimes many more.
