The ‘F-IRE presents’ series is a nice way of getting to know some of the emerging talents associated with the ambitious, experimental collective. This particular release, which introduces the compositional and improvisational chops of Samuel Eagles, doesn't disappoint, consisting of eight tracks penned by the young saxophonist and performed by his quartet. Eagles is an adherent of the US jazz tradition – and why not? – and shows a fluent understanding of the contributions of key players from Charlie Parker to Kenny Garrett and Ambrose Akinmusire in his playing and writing here. The sound of the quartet owes an acknowledged debt to that of Logan Richardson and his vibes player; Eagles is partnered by mallet man Ralph Wyld, who brings fresh textures and sonorities to the likes of ‘Outsider’. It's all underpinned by the smart rhythm work of bassist Fergus Ireland and drummer Eric Ford, who plays alongside Eagles' brother Duncan in Partikel.
