Young British altoist Samuel Eagles is a strong player with a rich sound and a fondness for bubbling, double-time runs. Ask, Seek, Knock, his second album, is deeply spiritual. There are echoes of A Love Supreme in the muscular grooves and billowing openings to tracks. But there are other influences in the mix too. ‘Hope In The Hills’, a ballad with a lilting piano groove has an R&B flavour (Eagles is a NEXT Collective fan), while the title track is rockier, anchored by minimalist riffs. Eagles has gone for an unorthodox line-up and it makes for some intriguing colours. Ralph Wyld's vibes make the backing figures glow and the two saxes vie with one another in fluid joint solos, blending and overlapping on the album's many refrains and adding to the richness of the harmony. Eagles' brother Duncan (leader of Partikel), plays on most tracks and offers an impassioned solo on ‘SPIRIT’, but there are also a brace of features for Jean Toussaint, one of Eagles' mentors. His taut tenor dances around the bustling groove of ‘Dreams and Visions of The Son’ and grapples with the brooding, angsty swing of ‘Hear His Voice’, one of the album's highlights.
