Chicagoan cornet player Rob Mazurek spent a number of years living in Brazil during the Noughties, and – though based in the States again now – maintains links through this Pan-American project. Indeed, on the strength of this latest album (their third since 2006), it sounds like being away from steamy jungle climes has only intensified his love for Brazilian tropicalia. The album resounds with echoes of artists like Lula Cortes who mixed psychedelic rock, traditional South American rhythms and downright weirdness – on top of which Mazurek et al add high, piercing cornet squeals, thick squelch-bass and sumptuously swirling electronic textures, creating a carnival-friendly version of his longer-running electro-acoustic project Chicago Underground Duo. That Chicago connection is made even more explicit on the couple of tracks where Tortoise drummer John Herndon plus other Windy City natives join in for some propulsive post rock with a 21st century, tropical twist.
