The second 2CD volume in Le Chant du Monde’s Sarah Vaughan series, The Complete 1947-1950, features brilliant interpretations of ‘The Man I Love’, ‘Black Coffee’, ‘It Might As Well Be Spring’ and more. Including excellent liner notes by Graham Colombé (in English with French translation), the 36-page CD booklet is a model of its kind. The first EJC disc pairs two big band dates: You’re Mine You, Vaughan’s second recorded collaboration with Quincy Jones (‘The Second Time Around’ and ‘The Best Is Yet To Come’ are standouts), plus The Explosive Side of Sarah Vaughan, the latter featuring terrific charts from Benny Carter. By way of contrast, the second EJC disc pairs two trio dates. After Hours finds the singer in superb form, a compelling ‘My Favorite Things’ just one of many highlights. With guitarist Barney Kessel and bassist Joe Comfort in support, Sarah + 2 (the follow-up to After Hours) includes a magnificent version of ‘When Sunny Gets Blue’.
