Featuring brilliant arrangements by Simon Golding, which place the mellifluous vocals of Sarah Weller centre stage, this 12-track collection pays fulsome homage to some of the singer's most important vocal touchstones. It opens in dynamic fashion with a deeply grooving take on ‘Stormy’, a fitting tribute to the great Flora Purim. ‘A Slow Hot Wind’ starts with a virtuosic, Gismontiesque prelude from Golding before the full band kick in – exceptional work here from the rhythm section of bassist Jules Jackson and drummer Simon Pearson and a typically inventive Hammond solo from Ross Stanley. A funky reimagining of ‘Sugar’ nods to DJ Giles Peterson's Jazz Juice albums, specifically the version of the Stanley Turrentine-penned song by Rahsaan Roland Kirk featuring Michael Hill. As Weller's love of vocal harmonies came from listening to her parents' Mamas and the Papas and Carpenters albums, her tribute to the latter is a sumptuous treatment of ‘All I Can Do’ complete with her own fabulous backing harmonies. Packed full of gorgeous chord substitutions, ‘In a Sentimental Mood’ is a standout. Two four-to-the-floor remixes of the title track by Nicola Conte and Mr Mundy bring this sumptuous sounding album to a close.
