Since winning the Perrier Young Jazz Award and graduating from NYJO, Josephine Davies has developed her musicianship playing with bands from Jamie Cullum through to Gareth Lockrane's Grooveyard and the Pete Hurt Jazz Orchestra. But for her solo records so far the tenor saxophonist prefers the less extroverted, strippeddown setting of the sax trio, giving her space to manoeuvre harmonically in more intimate surroundings. In the Corners of Clouds is a follow-up to last year's ‘live’ album self-titled Sartori, with the more swing-orientated drummer James Maddren replacing Paul Clarvis, who featured on the previous ‘live’ album. Davies, on tenor, steers close at times to the spirit of Trane's dark-hued modal explorations, while at others faintly echoes the Caribbean-rhythmic stirrings of Sonny Rollins’ pioneering bare-boned trios. Her tuneful thematic sensibilities, meanwhile, reveal something of the tender nursery-rhyme lyricism associated with Mark Lockheart's sax in Polar Bear. Satori tread a familiar path, but the personal as well as collective cohesiveness of its personnel rewards repeated listening.
