Derek Nash has fingers in many pies. The hardworking producer, composer/arranger and multi-reedman fronts various groups and works with others, both live and in the studio, while finding time to run a busy recording business of his own. Thanks to his extra-fat contacts book his Sax Appeal lineup here is as strong as any he has put together, with the worthy Brandon and Simon Allen (no relation) on the latest roster. This, their sixth offering, is put together with the same expertise, the same flawless accuracy and the same eclecticism as its five predecessors – a catch-all factor which might make it difficult for some jazz fans to enjoy. Nash's nine originals combine hip lead lines with occasionally old-fashioned voicings and a session-like blandness. ‘Walkin' on Air’ for example, a number, which sounds oddly familiar, finds Scott Garland doing a convincing David Sanborn impression, and ‘Here With Me’ is composed of those horrible surging smooth-jazz saxophone licks lifted directly from the Kenny G songbook. TV's Jools Holland also turns up as special guest, a surprise choice until one recalls that Nash works in his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra. Sure enough Holland confines himself to his standard boogie licks, although Nash's arrangement does require him to do so in seven keys. It's all good clean fun, but when will the real Derek Nash stand up?
