Four stalwarts of UK jazz and improvised music here convene for some dense and eventful storytelling, with a strong electronic flavour thanks to the restless textures generated by Isambard Khroustaliov.

A short, opening piece sets a murky scene, with Alex Bonney’s lonesome trumpet and James Allsopp’s disembodied tenor moans wafting across a landscape of electronic wibble and whine. For the second, 19-minute track, Tim Giles instantly ups the energy with heavily rattling free drums with just a hint of swing. Tenor and trumpet set about a bullish sparring session, with punchy Don Ayler-esque barrages knocking up against a slurred, puking sax, while the electronics whip up violent judders, intense sinewaves, tactile crunches and more. Throughout, Giles keeps the momentum moving forward, whether settling into a tight, sustained snare roll or racing ahead on urgently galloping brushes. It feels like an interstellar battle between plucky humans and giant robotic ants.

The concluding 13-minute piece surveys the damage done, with slow moving clouds of acrid smoke drifting across the battlefield while damaged robo-ants twitch and spasm on the blood-soaked ground. Call it a psychedelic sci-fi epic for the ears, if you like.
