“In this time and space, with improvisation as the constant, the three of us come together to visit and explore multiple currents and influences that are passing through us. You could say that we visit each other’s mind-streams as we explore our compositions”. So say the trio of pianist Edward Simon, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Brian Blade, who join forces to engaging effect on this compelling trio-with-extras set. It’s built on great, classic trio interplay but the compelling extras include the vocals of Becca Stevens and percussion of Rogério Boccato on ‘I Wanna Be With You’, which wriggles and sways restlessly, never settling, slipping between and blending Caribbean steelpan sounds and Brazilian rhythms, not to mention RnB and pop flavours. There are strings and other things on the pulsating, surging ‘You Are’, not least a burst of Chris Potter's tenor sax, swiftly followed by a bit of otherworldly spoken-word verse delivered by Jana Dagdagan.
