Doriz runs the Caveau de la Huchette club in Paris and is something of a veteran of French mainstream jazz, his playing modelled on that of the vibes pioneer Lionel Hampton. It's no great surprise then that Scott Hamilton fits in so readily with Doriz's regular band, the American swingster often scoring well in these kinds of impromptu situations. Unsurprisingly they open with ‘Slipped Disc’, Hamilton finding resourceful things to say on this old warhorse as Doriz emulates Hamp before the tenorist's own engaging riff piece ‘Dropsy’, Lebeugle's supple bass anchoring a good, swinging rhythm section. And that's the accent throughout a nicely varied set of tracks, with pianist Duchemin avoiding predictability and guest guitarist Fosset showing off his credentials on a couple. The very lively ‘Cotton Tail’ features visiting US trumpeter Baker with Hamilton unfurling yet another of his seemingly effortless solos before Doriz jangles his way through, scats unwisely and Baker plays a boppish if slightly fragile line, drummer Dorise, Doriz's son, pushing the offbeat. Donald Byrd's ‘Amen’ works really well, the stop-time routine suiting Doriz before Fosset takes off over the fast shuffle beat. Of course, Hamilton plays a ballad, Charles Trenet's ‘Que Reste-il de Nos Amours’ and does it beautifully, Doriz staying out, and that's part of the pleasure here, fast swing counterbalanced by lucid, relaxed grooving, Hamilton on song in every situation, the romping ‘Place du Tertre’ the album highlight.
