The gentle strengths of this collaboration are captured in the song titles: ‘Quiet Times’, ‘While The Trees Waltz’ and ‘Skydancer’. But don't be fooled that Counterpart is all ambient airiness: there's a tensile strength, a locked down vision between this duo that keeps the music urgent and eminently listenable. McCallum of course is best known for Cinematic Orchestra and Slowly Rolling Camera, and has worked with Foran before, not least on McCallum's soundscapey City. Each has a love of melody, trusting to the tune, but also a sense of the epic that can be found in each songs' studied detail. So a cut like ‘Stasis’ opens like a snowflake coalescing before you, an echoey chord, a gentle rhythm rapped on the body of an acoustic, piano chordings that are allowed to rest and decay, but never die. Electronics provide lift and colour. The Metheny comparisons are fair enough, but Foran and McCallum are far from derivative: if touch and feel rather than flash and ferocity speak to you, then welcome to the world of Counterpart.
