Although trumpeter Sean Gibbs’ debut album draws heavily on the modern mainstream, it avoids the generic. The result is a warm-hearted, nicely crafted set of originals ranging from the lyrical ballad ‘Mary’ to the woozy soul jazz of ‘Happy Hour’.
The album opens with the rhythm section bustle of ‘Internal Conflict” and Gibbs and tenor saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan phrasing soulful inflections and twiddly decorations as one. The mid-tempo groove of 'Camperdown', named after a playpark near Gibbs’ Dundee home, alludes to his childhood; the zesty up-tempo modernism of 'The Grand Parade', reflects on his first London home.
Gibbs, a fine trumpeter with classy intonation and a controlled attractive sound, is matched by his London-based support. Stone-Lonergan’s centred tone makes him an ideal foil, and bassist Calum Gourlay is equally solid on counterpoint bass and walking-bass swing.
The album, recorded and composed during the pandemic, celebrates the taken-for-granted human connections that became so sorely missed, a mood captured perfectly by the gospel-hued 'When Can I See You Again?’, the album’s final track.
