London-based multi-instrumentalist and leftfield thinker Sean Khan has been working under the radar on his second album, and what a smooth, grooving, soulful wonder it is. Surrounded by an army of the capital's best and brightest – everyone from Mike Edmonds and his swinging double bass to special guest singers Heidi Vogel, Sabrina Malheiros and neo-soul star Omar – Khan blazes an eclectic urban path, taking in broken beats and latin jazz and namechecking the likes of Trane, Jaco, Herbie and Gil along the way. There's innovation and street smarts here (French film director Louis Malle gets a tribute), along with the soothing and familiar; 4hero's remix of ‘Don't Let The Sun Go Down’ featuring Omar has the swelling, epic feel one expects. Highlights are too numerous to mention – aside, that is, from the eight-minute, three-part ‘What Has Jazz Become?’, with Genevieve Grant lending gravitas to a spoken word musing told from inside the head of a session player. Stunning.
