The pianist-composer Sebastien Ammann, since arriving in New York in 2008 from his native Switzerland, has assembled a few high-profile ensembles on the city’s more left-field jazz scene.
His Gaia Quartet boasts an exceptional personnel and their CD Color Wheel (released in 2017) has received plaudits in specialist journals and the more serious online blogs. On the new album Change of Course, a quintet play cohesively and solos grow imaginatively out of Amman’s elegantly melodic themes.
Ralph Alessi, one of the most mesmerising of trumpeters on the more explorative fringes of the NYC jazz scene, plays absorbingly haunting lines throughout sometimes reminiscent of Tomasz Stańko, while ‘The Meadows’ lives up to its promise with Alessi’s rhythmically exuberant muted trumpet and Ammann’s Mehldau-like percussive piano riding on McPherson’s brilliantly fizzing drums. On ‘Bright Light’, the impressive Caroline Davis’ solo on alto sax adds a calmer though bittersweet touch. No explicit tributes or well-intentioned concepts here, just an excellent band doing their thing and doing it very well.
