Brazilian icon Sérgio Mendes loves a musical adventure, which is evident on this mighty double album of works past and present, hither and yon. Hinged on the forthcoming documentary by filmmaker John Scheinfeld (Chasing Trane) and themed under the umbrella of joy, the emotion that most pervades the maestro’s journeys into Latin jazz and bossa nova as well as the more naturally fizzy disco and pop, this double whammy work is a neat take on an epic six-decade career. CD2 is the film’s official soundtrack: a cornucopia of tried-and-triumphed delights starting with the singalong Brasil ’66 classic ‘Mas Que Nada’ and serving up a further 15 tracks from Bacharach’s ever-breezy ‘Look of Love’ to Jobim’s ‘Agua de Berber’, the bossa jazz standard Mendes interpreted so memorably with Brasil ’66 and then, less adeptly, with will.i.am (the version included here).

As a bandleader, pianist and composer, Mendes has never shied away from cheese, and the new, collaborative CD1 has its moments. For the most part it showcases Mendes’ talent, popularity (fellow Brazilian legends Carlinhos Brown, João Donato and Hermeto Pascoal make cameos, as does rapper Common) and drive to stay current. Tunes co-written by Mendes and various featured artists maintain his sunny, silky trademark, with vocals – notably from Gracinha Leporace, Mendes’ wife and muse – lifting things skyward, always up.
