The British-South African ensemble picks up smartly from where it left off with 2016’s Wisdom Of Elders. In places there is a harder polyrhythmic surge as the tight entwining of Shabaka Hutchings’ tenor saxophone and Mthunzi Mvubu’s alto is a central point of interest, though the solidity of a rhythm section that is well anchored by Ariel’s Zamonsky often concise, punchy ostinatos is notable. In a largely piano-less setting the crisp drums and percussion of Tumi Mogorosi and Gontse Makhene also play a crucial role in giving the music a sustained momentum. The visceral appeal of the songs resonates with the underlying message of humanity and compassion, and the trump card played on a track such as ‘We Will Work (On Redefining Manhood)’ is Siyabonga Mthembu’s searing, affecting lead vocal amid the accompanying chants by other band members. All of which captures the spirit of some of the legendary South Africans, from Dudu Pukwana and Winston Mankunku to Abdullah Ibrahim and Sakhile, who are inspirational vessels of the far-reaching history on which this music stands.
