Noel Edmonds was one of those who got caught out by surreal comic writer Chris Morris' bogus scam on the brilliant late-1990s spoof documentary Brass Eye about a harmful drug called ‘Cake’. The usually mediocre TV presenter went on to describe its effect on Shatner's Bassoon, “a part of the brain that deals with time perception”. Prepare to have your perceptions mangled by this young Leeds five-piece of the same name that has released their self-produced debut album, Aquatic Ape Privilege. Already with a BBC Jazz on 3 live session under their belts, this amusingly irreverent collective come on like the mentally unstable lovechild of Tim Berne's Big Satan and TrioVD. It's no surprise then to learn that Shatner's Bassoon is the next generation of skronky jazz upstarts to emerge from the Leeds College of Music. Although John Zorn's Naked City, Mr Bungle and Frank Zappa are on their radar, the band isn't just an inyer-face assault on the senses by any means. They lunge from free improv pointillism, stuttering proggy avant-jazz metal freak-outs to absurdist, serene, spooky soundscapes that sound a bit like David Lynch movie soundtracks. Just be warned they've recently hired a second drummer. Oh and lay off the cake.
